THE TEXAS LONGHORN
Early Spanish explorers brought his lean breed of cattle to Mexico and they made their way up to Texas. After the U.S. Civil War, Texans needed money. They started raising and selling cattle to people in big Eastern cities. Cowboys led huge cattle drives that pounded along famous paths like the Chisholm Trail. When cattle drives ended in the late 1800's longhorns gradually disappeared. They almost became extinct. Since that time, longhorns have made a strong come back.
